Three friends hit the road the summer after high school, 1973. 25 states, two months, three sunburned left arms, one smelly canvas tent, two printed cards illustrating the deaf alphabet, 721 armadillos, 39,438 pancakes.

I only ever knew The Great Saltpetre Cave as yet another embarrassingly obscene-sounding Kentucky place name -- along with Big Bone Lick State Park and Beaver Lick Baptist Church. But now I know much more:

The limestone caves of Kentucky are noteworthy for being the home to millions of bats. Their droppings (guano) are full of "petre" which is easily converted to gunpowder. This particular cave is used as a venue for stage performances . . .
Thanks for the info. Charles camped at the cave 3 or 4 times. borught back pictures of the hugh main chamber. has gone actual 'caving' in and around that area with experienced people. He's much braver than i ever was....caving scared the poop out of me.
any big (or small) plans for the 4th of july?
